Description:
Mulatu Astatke, a pioneer of etio-jazz, and Tel Aviv's premier Afro-funk group, the Houdna Orchestra, have collaborated on the album "Tensoin" (2024)!Formed in 2012 in the south of Tel Aviv, the 12-member Hoodna Orchestra was initially a collective of musicians and composers united by a common love for Afrobeat. The diverse musical talents include guitarist Ilan Smilan of Sababa 5 fame, organist Eitan Drabkin, drummer Matan Asayag of the Shalosh Trio, percussionist Lani Birenbaum of The The American, and Faithfull Brothers. Their releases incorporate psychedelic rock, hard funk, soul, jazz, and East African music, and have been praised by Iggy Pop and Huey Morgan.Eventually, the orchestra members noticed a growing interest in Ethiopian music, especially Ethiojazz such as Mulatu Astatke, and changed their musical style. After releasing a recording with Ethiopian singer Tesfaye Negatu, Hoodna Orchestra had been looking for ways to collaborate with Mulatu. Around the beginning of 2023, they invited Mulatu to Tel Aviv to record an album and perform it live. The result is "Tension" (2024).Produced by Neil Sugarman, co-founder of Daptone Records, the album is at once gritty and majestic, soulful and uplifting. The result is a gritty yet majestic, soulful and uplifting work of art. The Hoodna Orchestra's love of Ethio Jazz has created a new masterpiece in Mulatu's extensive discography.
